These and other symptoms may be caused by temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), better known as “TMJ.”  These disorders are characterized by pain and dysfunction of the jaw joint and muscles.  TMD can be diagnosed by your dentist, orthodontist or physician, and a multi-disciplinary approach, including physical therapy, can help you manage these symptoms.

Signs and Symptoms of TMD
  • Jaw pain at rest and/or when talking or eating
  • Headache
  • Painful clicking, popping or grinding of jaw with mouth opening or closing;Limited movement or locking of jaw
  • Stiff jaw muscles
  • Ear pain, pressure or ringing
  • Neck pain

THERAPY CAN HELP!
Our Program Includes:
Initial examination and evaluation of jaw,  neck and upper body to identify musculoskeletal imbalances, and the sources of dysfunctional movement patterns;
Exercises that address relevant imbalances or harmful movement patterns found on initial exam;
Integration of optimal breathing patterns, posture, relaxation, and oral habits into self-care strategies;
Manual therapy to help relieve pain and enhance stabilization or flexibility, as needed;
Training in how to self-manage should there ever be a recurrence of the problem
